“Rethink what it means to be… GAY”

Rethink

People always ask us “rethink what it means to be gay… what’s that about?”

Most often when you hear the word “gay, lesbian, transgender” people tend to cringe (even within the LGBT community).  Why is that?  It’s because our community is so used to being labeled to associate with negativity.  It’s almost like we’ve reconciled to believe it’s true, that our differences rejected by society makes it right to settle for less.

Do these overstated assumptions define us?

If you ask us, we don’t see any difference.  Who we love or what we do in our privacy does not define us. It’s our contributions to society that does.

When we hear “gay” we don’t feel guilty.  We accept our existence.  When you’re honest with yourself, you don’t try to be someone you’re not.  You focus on your talents and contributions.  Your successes in life will be contagious.

eXpression! magazine is challenging you to rethink the current situation.

Remember being a teenager? Oh, the hormone inflicted years when everything seemed to change and adults were the dumbest creatures roaming the earth…how can we forget!  For most of us those years were a mix of incredible highs and terrible lows.  Whether you were a jock, a nerd, a cheerleader or the average kid with a bad haircut, I am sure you remember the one thing we all had in common: the need to fit in. Acceptance, after all, is one of the main ingredients necessary to create a stable adult.

Back in the dark ages, homosexuality was not something anyone spoke about freely.  Kids questioning their feelings for same-sex friends were left to sort them out on their own.  For these kids, high school was not a time for socializing and having fun, it was a period of loneliness and uncertainty. There were no clubs or alliances, no place to meet others who felt likewise, there was no support and no acceptance.

Have times changed?

February 2010 – Wang Chung Boys

Feb2010

As an immigrant’s child Danny Chang learned from an early age the importance of family, respect and responsibility. As a gay man he’s also learned the difficulties of being both a representative of his Vietnamese culture and an active—and happy—member our LGBT community.  Born in San Francisco, Chang followed his heart to Hawaii and for the last three years has made a home for himself here. An engineer by trade he had no trouble finding a day job but the desire to own a business persisted. Five months ago he opened Wang Chung’s Bar and Karaoke.

January 2010 – Being The Change You Wish To See

January 2010

Insanity has been defined as the act of continuing to do the same thing expecting new results.  While most of us don’t think of ourselves as crazy, few people seem to grasp the meaning before this definition.  Too many of us are waiting for others to become nicer, for our jobs to become profitable or for our laws to become fair while we go about being the same person, doing our jobs the same way and seeking no involvement with politics.

See the pattern here?  With this mind, we are delighted to introduce a couple who have worked very hard to change the world we live in and to bring equal rights to the LGBT community of Hawaii.  It has been a long process for them and one that has changed their personal lives in ways that they could’ve never imagined.
